Optical Power meter OPM

Optical Power

Light energy per unit time.

A power is measured in watts = joules / second. In optical communications, powers is calculated dBm.

Optical powers are measured with optical power meters.Optical power meter and Optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs) are essential part of optical fiber communication.

Optical Power Meter

An optical power meter is an instrument used to measure the optical power in a light beam.

Optical Power Measurement

Optical power meter comes with a sensor head. Some optical instruments measure the heat (work for high power lasers) and some are based on photo diode circuitry (for the low power levels used in fiber optic communication systems).

Optical power meters use optical detectors (photo diode) to detect light energy and power levels. Mostly detectors are based on:

  • silicon (Si)
  • Germanium (Ge).
  • Indium-Gallium-Arsenide (InGaAs).

Photo-diode

A PN junction device that conduct current when exposed to light energy. It converts light energy into electrical energy.
