SMART Card

It is an electronic circuit which is used to provide information about its holder.

Subscriber Identity Module.

In case of Mobile SIM card it enables a mobile device to communicate over telecom network. It is available in different size depends on the slot size of a device.

Parts of SIM Card

Sim card Contains UICC “Universal Integrated Circuit Card”. It has following Units

  • Processor
  • RAM
  • ROM
  • EPROM

Functions of SIM Card

It stores the following information

  • Identification.
  • Authentication.
  • Storage

ICCID Code

Integrated Circuit Card Identifier or ICCID

format of the ICCID is:

MMCC IINN NNNN NNNN NN C

MM = Industry Identifier

CC = Country Code

II= Issuer Identifier

N{12} = Account ID (“SIM number”)

C = Checksum calculated from the other 19 digits using the Luhn algorithm.

SIM codes

It store the following information

  • Integrated Circuit Card Identifier or ICCID
  • International Mobile Subscriber Identity or IMSI
  • Authentication Key or KI
  • Local Area Identity or LAI
  • Personal Identification Number or PIN
  • Personal unblocking code or PUK
  • SMS
  • Contacts
  • Last dial number

IMSI Code

The IMSI is stored in SIM and is sent by the phone to the appropriate network. The IMSI is used to acquire the details of the mobile in the Home Location Register (HLR) or the Visitor Location Register (VLR).

MCC = MObile Country Code

MNC = Mobile Network Code

MSIN = Mobile Subscriber Identification Number
